The Patrick Clements Clinic was temporarily moved into portacabin accommodation whilst the new hospital was being built.
The artist’s brief was to produce a series of photographic images for various areas of the department : male waiting, female waiting, health education and examination rooms. The artworks needed to move with the staff into the new hospital and therefore withstand the tight constraints of the temporary environment. Visually the images needed to fit into the busy department and hold the attention of the patient in various stages of the waiting and examination process. In the initial image discussions various tools of the trade were integrated - speculums etc, but it was decided to use the flower and tree images as subtle sexual references. In the health education room condoms have been integrated into the repeat flower pattern , the roses with ‘black spot’ as a metaphor for sexual disease.
